Last Days of Dog Town
June 19, 2007Last Days of Dogtown by Anita Diamant
Based loosely on a true story of a historic community, this novel is set on Cape Ann in the early 1800s. Dogtown is populated with the castoffs of society, prostitutes, widows, orphans and African Americans, all struggling to survive in early 19th century America. Called “Dogtown” because of the large number of stray dogs found there, the inhabitants of the community appear to be strays as well, many arriving having no where else to go. However, readers will be enthralled with the lives of these people and will find themselves hoping for the success and happiness of the characters even as the town of Dogtown appears to be disappearing. The author has created a cast of characters that are believeable and, for the most part, likeable. A few characters, you will love to hate!
