Last Days of Dog Town

Last Days of Dogtown by Anita Diamant

Based loosely on a true story of a  historic community, this novel is set on Cape Ann in the early 1800s. Dogtown is populated with the castoffs of society, prostitutes, widows, orphans and African Americans, all struggling to survive in early 19th century America. Called “Dogtown” because of the large number of stray dogs found there, the inhabitants of the community appear to be strays as well, many arriving having no where else to go. However, readers will be enthralled with the lives of these people and will find themselves hoping for the success and happiness of the characters even as the town of Dogtown appears to be disappearing. The author has created a cast of characters that are believeable and, for the most part, likeable.  A few characters, you will love to hate!

Sun Storm

Sun Storm by Asa Larsson
“Rebecka Martinsson is heading home to Kiruna, the town she’d left in disgrace years before. A Stockholm attorney, Rebecka has a good reason to return: her friend Sanna, whose brother has been horrifically murdered in the revivalist church his charisma helped create. Beautiful and fragile, Sanna needs someone like Rebecka to remove the shadow of guilt that is engulfing her, to forestall an ambitious prosecutor and a dogged policewoman.”–BOOK JACKET.
This was a winner! Well-written, believable characters kept me interested, though I was a tad disappointed with the ending. There seems to be a second book in the works. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Rebecka and to see how the author improves and changes.
